A bit about me

Hi there! I am Sylvia Garcia Lopez, an enthusiastic artist with a love for drawing and painting that has been with me since childhood. I hold a Bachelor of Art Degree from Mount St. Mary’s University in Los Angeles, California, as well as a Master of Public Administration Degree from California State University, Long Beach.

In my pursuit of expanding my artistic skills, I have taken various courses in Digital Media and Surface Pattern Design from prestigious institutions such as Otis College of Art and Design and the University of California, Los Angeles. Additionally, I have also completed multiple online surface pattern design courses.

Early on in my career, I had the opportunity to paint on majolica tiles for my first job after graduating from Mount St. Mary’s University. Later, I secured a permanent position with the City of Los Angeles, where I delved into tasks such as budget analysis, personnel requests processing, and other administrative/analytical work.

Throughout my professional journey, I have been fortunate enough to highlight my design skills by creating posters, brochures, training material, and even designing Microsoft Access Databases, SharePoint sites, and PowerBi Dashboards. However, it was not until 2017, when I discovered the captivating world of Surface Pattern Design at Otis College of Art and Design, that my true passion for creating surface pattern designs truly ignited.

Since then, I have been on an incredible learning journey, thoroughly enjoying the process of bringing unique and captivating surface pattern designs to life.

As an artist, I bring a unique blend of analytical thinking and artistic flair to my work, both combining hand-drawn, hand-painted, and digital creations. I am inspired by diverse styles like renaissance, modernism, cubism, the arts and crafts movement, and the hand painted tile traditions of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. With acrylic and watercolor paints and digital drawing tools like Procreate, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator, I am constantly exploring new techniques.

I love to capture the intricacies of everything from structural buildings to a flower’s veins; this serves as inspiration for the unique shapes, colors, and textures in my artwork. My artistic style can vary from whimsical to serious and geometric, but they all have one thing in common - the ability to capture the intricate connections and relationships found in the natural and manufactured world.
